Samran Rat Gate

Surroundings

This area used to be part of the monk’s quarter of Wat Thepthidaram. The government requested the temple to hand over the land, in order to build Soi Samran Rat (Samran Rat passage) to ease the traffic in Maha Chai and Dinso Road. In the past, the surrounding area was called the Pratoopi (the Gate of the Dead), due to the fact that this area was the only passage to take the dead out of the city area to Wat Saket (the Golden Mountain) as funeral was prohibited in Phra Nakorn district (City Wall). During the Phibunsongkram government, this area was renamed Samran Rat.
